With E-Bikes on the World’s Highest Volcano – Ojos del Salado, January 2017

In January 2017, we set out on an adventure unlike any other: climbing the Ojos del Salado in Chile, the world’s highest volcano at 6,893 meters, using e-mountain bikes. Our team of four was determined to push the limits of what was possible with this cutting-edge technology, and the journey turned out to be as challenging as it was unforgettable.

Our adventure began on January 13 in the small coastal town of Caldera. From there, we pedaled 400 kilometers inland, navigating paved roads, gravel tracks, and rugged mountain trails. The first stages took us through the Atacama Desert, known for its brutal conditions. Scorching heat and the fine desert sand tested not only our endurance but also the capabilities of our e-bikes. With the robust bikes from Riese & Müller, equipped with Bosch’s Performance Line CX motors, we were able to meet these challenges head-on.

One of the biggest aspects of our journey was managing the energy for our bikes. Using Bosch’s DualBattery system, with a combination of two PowerPacks, we had up to 1,000 watt-hours of power per bike. Each evening, we recharged the batteries using solar energy, a sustainable and effective solution in a region with such abundant sunshine.

The terrain only grew more intense as we ventured deeper into the Andes. We faced deep ravines, jarring corrugated roads, and mountain passes soaring up to 4,500 meters. As the altitude increased, so did the cold, and every pedal stroke became more demanding. Still, the breathtaking views and our collective determination kept us moving forward.

By January 20, we reached the high camp at 5,200 meters. From there, we began the final push toward the summit. The weather, however, had other plans. Storms rolled in, and fresh snow blanketed the trail. Despite the tough conditions, we pushed on and reached an altitude of 6,250 meters – a record for us and for e-mountain bikes. But as the storms grew more severe, we made the tough decision to turn back. Safety came first.

Looking back, the journey wasn’t just about reaching the summit – it was about proving what’s possible. With every kilometer we rode, we saw the potential of e-bikes to open up new frontiers of adventure. While we didn’t stand at the top, we left with the satisfaction of knowing we had accomplished something extraordinary.

The Ojos del Salado expedition will always remind us of the power of teamwork, determination, and the blend of technology with human spirit. We may not have reached the summit, but the experience left us hungry for more adventures to come.
